Core Teams Excel in Orlando Soccer Tournament

Teams from Fort Collins’ Core Soccer Academy faired well at the Got Milk? 3v3 National Soccer Championships this past weekend in Orlando, Florida.

The tournament, held at Disney’s Wide World of Sports, was the culmination of Got Milk?’s 65-City National Tour involving sixteen thousand youth teams across the United States.

Of the seven teams sent by Core to Orlando, six of them advanced beyond pool play to the playoffs.  Two teams captured national titles, one team was the runner up champion, and one team captured a hard-fought 5th place victory.

The Core Lightning, coached by Greg Owsley, competed in the Girls Under-10 Competitive division.  They beat a team from Texas 4-3 in the finals to win the championship.  Players include Zola Owsley, Adeline Thompson, Koree Willer, Sarah French, and Heather Hall.

The Core Ruption, coached by Robb Ball, advanced undefeated through seven matches and beat Denver’s Predators 6-3 to take the Boys Under-11 Competitive Championship.  Players include Avery Ball, James Fanning, Randy Forseth, Axel Fleischli, and Samuel Deitz.

The Core Challengers, coached by Bob Potterveld, competed in the Girls Under-11 Recreational Division and captured the runner up championship in their bracket.

In perhaps the most amazing game of the tournament, the Children of the Core, coached by Craig Deacon, advanced to the 5th Place game in the Girls Under-15 Competitive Division.  At half time, the team was down 5-0.  Not to give in easily, the team fought back to a 5-5 tie as regulation time expired and went on to win 6-5 in sudden death overtime.

In just two short years since its inception, the Core Soccer Academy has established itself as a local and national force in training youth in soccer skills and strategy.  [For more information, visit]
